What Is Soft Tissue Manipulation?

Soft tissue manipulation, also known as therapeutic massage, is a type of manual therapy used to reduce pain, soreness, and stiffness by releasing restrictions caused by chronically tight muscles. Increased circulation provides nutrients and remove toxins produced by the body in response to tissue damage and inflammation, promoting better long-term healing.

Soft tissues include muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, vessels, and the network of connective tissue that stabilises and supports every structure in the body. Use of targeted STM on these tissues can treat musculoskeletal dysfunction caused by occupational and postural fatigue, and sports injuries. Tissues around the affected area are also targeted, to relieve any compensatory tightness that can develop and to support healing.

What is the difference between massage therapy and STM?

Massage therapy uses different types of pressure and movements on the skin and muscles aimed at general relaxation, and soothing and easing of muscle pain. STM also uses contact and manipulation, but specifically to treat dysfunctional tissues and support recovery of damaged tissues.

How can STM help me?

STM uses a combination of targeted soft tissue mobilization and therapeutic massage, recommended for:
• pain relief from work- and sport-related injuries
• maintenance therapy for athletes prone to recurring injuries
• interim support for patients undergoing osteopathic treatment
• therapy for general musculoskeletal fatigue.
Treatment is tailored to support the specific type, timescale, and degree of dysfunction.
